The Results of Self-assessment

As I mentioned in the previous post, I used What Color is Your Parachute? to help determine my direction in a new career. So what came of it? Combined with the data I obtained from some career counseling sessions with a professional counselor, I developed a pretty good picture of my skills and preferences. You probably don’t want to hear all the details; I’m trustworthy, loyal, helpful, whatever, blah blah. That’s mostly of interest just to me. What’s relevant to this blog is the big picture, which indicates that to get what I want, I will probably have to start my own company.

Why? Well, first off is my antipathy towards the job search process. If I can create my own company, I may never have to job-hunt again. Hallelujah! Of course, I may be trading one challenge for another, in the form of a search for funds, personnel, customers, what have you. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Second, creating a company will be work that I enjoy. Thinking creatively to solve problems, working independently or managing a team, are all skills that I am good at and enjoy. Third, there have been times in the past where I thought, “You know, there’s a real need for XYZ”. I never followed up on XYZ, only to find later that someone else turned my concept into a business. In the past, I haven’t been positioned to act on these ideas, but now I’m eager to try. As they say, chance favors the prepared mind. Fourth, why not try? It’s an adventure, a challenge, a chance to do something new.

So, what about this new business? I have some ideas, not yet fully formed, that I’ll share in a future post. However, even without a definite XYZ idea, I need to begin the process of figuring out how to start a company. Wish me luck.
